This was in the city of Leningrad. For 25 years, I heard from my teacher Sidlin that painting is produced through the identity of the artist and not as a “Covenant of the Rainbow” in which the colors were given from above, one next to the other.
Colors, forms, lines, tones are all born on the canvas and they exist in relationship to a specific painting and not as independent forces.
Color whose source comes from awareness expresses individuality.
The painting is not a description on the surface of the canvas but rather it is the structure of the surface itself, its spirit.
The artist is like the tuner of a musical instrument. The surface of the painting is so stretched out that even a nail will not leave a scratch on it and the viewer needs to build himself by the surface.
