Sand, Gravel and Cement, Asphalt, Iron and Concrete My paintings depict the outdoors – urban landscapes, construction sites, junk yards, industrial zones – mainly in the Jerusalem area. I am interested in lighting – be it darkness or the sun’s blinding light, and am drawn to places with sharp contrasts, and extreme colors, lighting and texture. The drawings are based on photographs I take, and always relate to specific sites. Even while I am photographing, such as in St. Petersburg, I am drawn to similar types of sites, and the same kind of search occurs in my paintings. Andy Warhol was always very vague regarding the message his work conveys. When asked, why tomato soup? He answered: that’s what we had at home. When asked, why Elvis? He replied: that’s what was in the paper. I can also claim I paint what is available, but clearly that would be evading the issue because what you have at hand is a very specific choice from all the rest. My explanation is that discovering order and internal logic in chaos fills me with happiness each time anew. Through my work, I observe the rather arbitrary reality and seek its essence, which summarizes it. I discover that these sites have their own life, and that there is a certain analogy between these landscapes and my inner world.
