Hirbet Madras Mosaic

7, March 2011 · People and Places

In the Judean lowland, within a short distance from the famous Beit Govrin caves, the archeologists have recently discovered church remnants, containing mosaics from the late Roman – early Byzantine period, of extraordinary beauty and preservation. An agrarian settlement used to be in the same location, starting from the Iron Age (1000 B.C.) through the Roman period. Adjacent to the church excavations, one can explore caves, secret tunnels, a columbarium and many more – all these dating back to the days of Bar Kokhba revolt.

P.S. Barely a week passed since this publication, and we learned from the news that the Hirbet Madres Mosaic was ruined by unknown vandals.
